KPMG

Audit Senior, 1984 to 1986

What I learned most in my accountancy training was how quickly to pick up the essentials of different, large and complex businesses so as to be able to give an opinion on their results.

I was articled for my chartered accountancy exams at KPMG (Formerly Peat Marwick). I undertook audit and accountancy work, taxation services (both compliance and advisory) and assisted in insolvencies.

The range of activities of the clients is suggested by the examples listed below - most clients were PLCs, and many in the FTSE 100:

  • Aerospace engineering company
  • Construction company
  • Power supply company
  • Manufacturing companies
  • Insurance brokers, under-writers and reinsurance companies
  • Livery company
  • Computer retailers

Other projects included: feasibility study for a new hotel complex; recommendations for improved methods at a small manufacturer; other accounting reviews including major newspaper.
